Chippewa County was organized on February 1, 1827. It is named after the Ojibwe Native Americans that lived in the area. The county seat is Sault (Soo) Ste Marie, Michigan. Sault Ste. Marie was founded in 1668 as a Jesuit mission by Jacques Marquette and Claude Dablon. It is the oldest town in Michigan.
The photo to the left is the Sabin Lock. It opened in 1919, was last used in 1989, and was decommissioned in 2010. Along with the adjacent decommissioned Davis Lock it is being replaced with a new 110' by 1200' lock.
